Description

This is the northern end of the Small Magellanic Cloud , a dwarf irregular galaxy at a distance of only 200,000 light years from earth. The galaxy is visible with the naked eye (hence its name 'cloud') and contains several hundred million stars. At declination -73 degrees it is seen almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere.

The image contains 3.5 hours exposure through LRGBHa filters (90min L and 30min for each of the other filters, all 180second exposures).

Processing in Pixinsight:

Automatic Background Extraction (all) plus Dynamic Background Extraction (L only)

Deconvolution with mask and local deringing support

Mure Denoise using default parameters

Linear RGB combination, Background Neutralization and Photometric Colour Calibration

Auto Histogram Stretch for RGB image

Ha HDRM Multiscale Transform and Histogram Transformation.

NBRGB Combination to blend non-linear Ha with RGB images, followed by Histogram Transformation to align red histogram with Green and Blue channels.

LRGB combination to merge L with RGBHa image.

TGV Denoise

Multistage Median Transformation

Curves Transformation to darken background and brighten highlights.
