Description

Pismis 4 is an open cluster located in the southern constellation of Vela. The brightest star of about 45 members shines at 7.5mag. Pismis 4 is in the same line of sight as the Vela supernova remnant (as indicated by the nebula), but further away at a distance of 1900 light years (Vela supernova remnant ~800 light years). It was discovered by Paris Marie Pismis - an astronomer of Aremenian descent(1911-1999), who studied open clusters in Mexico.
