Description

This object is the magnificent Hercules Galaxy Cluster. The cluster consists of 200 galaxies located 500 million light-years away in the constellation of Hercules. The image is best seen in the full resolution view. The image is about one degree across, which encompasses a span of almost 10 million light years.

The Hercules Cluster is one of the few galaxy clusters without a huge elliptical galaxy at its center, at least not yet. At the very center of the image is Arp 272, a trio of interacting galaxies. Many other merging and interacting galaxies are seen throughout the image.
