Description

M78, just to the north of Alnitak and the Flame and Horsehead Nebulae, lies this interesting fellow. Mostly a reflection nebula surrounding with dark clouds, it is seen here swimming in a sea of emission swirls that comprise the inner part of Barnard's Loop.
