Description

This object is a pair of beautiful distorted Magellanic spiral galaxies located 25 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici. It is amazing to me that these two galaxies have such odd but similar structures - a massive spiral arm that wraps around the entire core region. The larger galaxy is NGC 4618 and the smaller galaxy is NGC 4625.

The larger galaxy is 30,000 light years in diameter, much smaller than our Milky Way. Its apparent diameter to us is about 4 minutes.

It appears that their distortions are due to a close encounter in the past, which also kicked off star formation in each galaxy. I like the delicate colors of both galaxies - yellowish core, bluish star clusters and pinkish Ha regions. I also like the distant galaxy that faintly appears between them.

Faint background galaxies appear throughout the image, especially towards the lower right.
