Description

M81 is a beautiful spiral galaxy approximately 12 million light years away, making it one of the closest large galaxies outside our local group. I was surprised to learn that M81 is actually blue shifted meaning it is moving towards us. M81 has stunning spiral arms which contain star forming regions which I've tried to pull out of this image with the help of my 7nm Ha filter. Barely visible below M81 is a dwarf satellite galaxy named Holmberg IX which I have actually never noticed in previous observations until this most recent imaging session.
