Description

Although labeled a septet, this small object is a compact group of eight galaxies located 400 million light years away in the constellation of Leo. It is believed that many of these galaxies are interacting. This galaxy group is also known as Hickson 57.

The galaxy field is 5 minutes tall, with the largest galaxy (NGC 3753, at the center bottom) measuring 1.7 minutes in apparent diameter. This galaxy is clearly distorted from the interaction. The septet consists of the trio which includes NGC 3753, the trio above them, and the single elliptical galaxy toward the bottom right.

According to the Cambridge Atlas of Galaxies, the title of "Copeland's Septet" was first used in 1976 and refers to its discoverer, Dr. Ralph Copeland, who discovered this group in 1874. Each of the septet galaxies have NGC numbers with luminosities which range from 13.6 to 15.2 The 8th galaxy is the small galaxy in the exact center of the image (between the two trios). This galaxy is 17.4 magnitude and was not seen by Copeland. The redshifts of all 8 galaxies are similar.

Other galaxies are seen nearby, most notably the elliptical galaxy just above the upper trio, but I assume that these other galaxies are not related to the group.
