Description

My friend, Karl Krueger, took this shot. He's an accomplished nature photographer and asked if we could get together for him to try some astrophotography. He wanted to shoot the lunar eclipse, but it ended up being bitter cold and windy here. Karl "toughed it out" however, to get some shots of the moon and the Beehive Cluster, M44, that I probably wouldn't have had the chance to get. He used his full frame Canon camera at ISO 3200 (f/8) on a sturdy tripod to take 2 and 4 second exposures at a focal length of 150mm - the focal length that I had recommended to him based upon using an online FOV calculator. He framed up the shot I suggested in total faith, not because he could see the stars in M44 (welcome to astrophotography). There was some star trailing in all his exposures. I took the best two, stacked them, and applied some curves to bring up the stars. We then superimposed a .5 sec exposure of the moon he had taken. The shot is unnatural, but fun.
