Description

This tiny Arp object, also known as NGC 3808, is two interacting galaxies located 300 million light years away in the constellation of Leo. The apparent size of each galaxy is less than one minute.

I love the bridge of stars between these two galaxies and how it spirals around the top galaxy into a faint polar ring. This bridge stretches for almost 100,000 light years, equivalent to the diameter of our Milky Way. The face-on galaxy appears to be going through a period of star formation, as would be expected in such an interaction, with many bright star clusters.

A faint edge-on third galaxy is seen just above and left of the top Arp 87 galaxy. Several other faint background galaxies are also visible throughout the image.
