Description

M13 - Hercules Globular Cluster

17.03.2019

M13 is a globular cluster, a collection of around 300,000 stars, residing at a distance ~22,000 light-years from Earth.

Discovered in 1714 by Edmond Halley, it spans a distance of ~145 light-years across and is so densely populated with stars that they sometimes collide and merge forming new stars (called 'blue stragglers'). The total mass of the cluster is estimated to be ~600,000 solar masses.

The spiral galaxy NGC 6207 is also barely visible in the lower left part of this image.
