Description

This is my recent Rosette nebula after colorimetric correction, so that's not just a pretty picture:

Typical monitors do not have the ability to show highly saturated, monochromatic colors, as e.g. H alpha would be with its discrete 656nm emission. Thus there are a lot of discussions, how red and how saturated an H-Alpha channel has to be represented. Based on the CIE1931 color space I developped a mathematical model, from which one can exactly derive the correct (RGB)-triplets for a given wavelength and a given monitor color gamut/whitepoint combination. As most monitors use sRGB (and are downcalibrated to sRGB in case of wide gamut monitors with common colorimeter profiling) I did this for an sRGB monitor with a D65 whitepoint, as defined in the sRGB specs.

As H alpha (as either narrowband emitter) has a 100% color saturation, the best color representation is somewhere on the border of the monitor's color triangle, for H Alpha, this point lies on the line between the primaries B and R. Using some color matrix hocuspocus, there is exactly ONE color and linear combinations of it, which give the closest visual representation for H Alpha. This color has been worked into this picture. So, H Alpha channels shall not be colored in red and used as a red channel, but used as this very specific H alpha color. The same methodology applies for every other narrowband emission line.
