Description

This object is a tiny interacting pair of merging spiral galaxies, NGC 6621 and NGC 6622, located 300 million light years away in the constellation of Draco. NGC 6621 is the larger galaxy towards the top and NGC 6622 is at the bottom (the Astrobin annotation is incorrect). The galaxy pair is classified as a starburst system. The main portions of each of these galaxies are less than 30 arc-seconds in apparent width to us.

My favorite part of the image is the long curving star stream that connects both galaxies. This stream is twice the span of our Milky Way. Other signs of the merger include the distorted bright yellow galaxy cores, and the vigorous star formation as shown in the bright blue arc-like cluster midway between the two cores.

A number of other faint galaxies are visible in the background.
