Description

The Monkey Head Nebula (Sh2-252) is an emission nebula located in the Orion Constellation. Also nearby is a fainter emission nebula Sh2-247 (just above and to the right of the Sh2-252).

I decided to work on this one for the Cloudy Nights beginning and intermediate imaging forum March 2019 challenge. This is one of the fainter Hydrogen Alpha emission nebulae I've imaged, and I needed to increase the exposure time I've been imaging at to capture it. My longest subs up until now were 180s, but I increased the duration to 360 s for these images. This also pushed me to finally start guiding and dithering.

Imaged on March 11/12/16 , 2019 with WO GT81 at F4.7 (382 mm focal length) using Flat6A II field flattener/0.8x reducer, Optolong 12nm H-alpha Filter, and full spectrum modified Nikon D5300.

Calibrated using batch pre-processing (BPP) script using darks, bias, and flats. Extracted red channel. Registered and stacked using StarAlighment and Integration. Total integration time of ~4.5 hours using 45 subs at ISO400x360 sec. Post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE, MLT noise reduction, stretched using Histogram Transformation Tool, Curves Transformation, TGVDenoise, HDR Multiscale Transform, Local Histogram Equalization, and Morphological Transformation.
