Description

This object is a barred spiral galaxy located 160 million light years away in the northern constellation of Camelopardalis. It is the ninth object in the Arp catalog of peculiar galaxies, in the category of "galaxies with split arms". Arp's simple comment on this galaxy is "bifurcated arm does not start at end of bar".

The galaxy is quite a bit larger than the Milky Way, with a diameter of 130,000 light years. Not much has been written about this galaxy. The arms are difficult to see clearly at this distance but appear to be knotted with several larger star clusters.

The most interesting thing to me about this galaxy is the distinct bar across the middle. The bar extends significantly beyond the extent of the central core.

Several faint galaxies are visible in the background. Interestingly, a number of these galaxies appear to be small dwarf galaxies, looking like smudges on the background.
