Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is a beautiful spiral galaxy which lies at an estimated distance of 23 million light years. Perhaps it's most distinguishing feature is that it is currently interacting with its neighbor galaxy, NGC 5195. It is believed that the gravitational interaction between these two galaxies has contributed to the formation of the large number of star forming regions seen as the red areas along the Whirlpool Galaxy's spiral arms. I've imaged M51 before, however this was my first attempt at integrating Ha data into the image in order to pull out these star forming regions.
