Description

This object is a nearly edge-on galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Lynx. At 87,000 light years in diameter, it is slight smaller than our Milky Way galaxy. The galaxy is 9 minutes in apparent diameter and is very bright. It is 11 degrees from being exactly edge-on.

My favorite aspect of this galaxy are the multiple concentric but ragged dust lanes on the lower right side of the core. Several blue star clusters appear to be visible in the upper right outer region of the galaxy.

There are at least 100 faint galaxies visible in the background of the image, including many clusters. I especially like the clusters to the lower left of the galaxy, several of which have an amazing variety of color despite being so small.

One minor thing I that I enjoy about this image is the interesting, fairly symmetric U-shaped asterism in the lower right corner. Little surprises like that are an unexpected pleasure.
