Description

I upgraded to EdgeHD in Jan 2019 as the coma issue on the normal C8 becomes more and more annoying. The choice of the right focuser is tricky as EdgeHD can lock the primary mirror to avoid mirror shift and fix the back focus. The traditional MicroTouch I have been using on C8 is great but it couldn't work with a locked primary mirror.

I loaned the OPTEC TCF-S focuser - a crayford style - from my friend. It works great when the reducer is not attached, for which the back focus is 133mm. This helps me to get the picture with an exact focal length of 2032mm. If the reducer is attached, then the recommended back focus (105mm) cannot be observed no matter how.

The focuser would be perfect, had it not used screws to tighten to the focuser drawtube. After a few nights of continuous shooting, the prolonged focus points indicate certain degree of sagging. I remember one night I caught the focuser in the air when I just started to dissemble it.

I would still consider the focuser, if I had a C11 or C14 EdgeHD. The back focus wouldn't be an issue.
