Description

This is a mosaic of 5 panels of the Waning Gibbous Moon captured only three days after the greatest full Moon at perigee (supermoon) of 2020. The Moon was still very near to the Earth, with a big apparent size, and its Declination positioned it very high in the sky for my Latitude, lowering the atmospheric turbulence.

All those conditions made it possible to achieve a very fine resolution. Each panel had the maximum resolution of the ASI1600 camera (of about 4600x3500 px), so the whole image, comprising the 5 panels, provides a superb total resolution.

From a fully lit western limb to a very discernible topography on a broad eastern strip, this image exhibits in great resolution the major and minor surface features of the Moon, including Oceanus Procellarum, the major Copernicus, Kepler and Tycho Craters with their extensive ray systems, a sequence of the lunar maria, from west to east, with a decreasing solar altitude: Mare Imbrium, Mare Serenitatis, Mare Tranquilitatis and, partially, Mare Fecunditatis as well as only the the western edge of Mare Crisium, with the very top of the Picard Crater under sunlight. The Terminator zone goes all the way from South to North Pole, providing beautiful topography contrast all along it, exposing craters’ depths and several rimae, dorsa and sharp spikes of shadows cast by mountains and ridges.

Although the LRGB filter set is indicated in the gear area, only the G filter was used for each image.

Please see the mosaic at full resolution and pan your sight over the different lunar regions! Have a nice spacewalk!
