Description

NGC 7635 is an emission nebula located in the northern constellation Cassiopeia. It was nicknamed the "Bubble Nebula" because of its shape, which was created by a strong stellar wind from a young massive star located above and right of the Bubble's center. Although the star is around two million years old, the surrounding nebula is apparently only about 40,000 years old. The bubble is expected to be formed as a shock front where the stellar wind meets interstellar material at supersonic speeds (1,800–2,500 km/s), causing the star to lose over a millionth of the mass of the Sun every year. The hot star is several hundred thousand times more luminous and some 45 times more massive than the Sun. The about 10 light-year diameter bubble offers evidence of energetic and violent events from the life cycle of massive stars.
