Description

This object, also known as IC 1222, is a disturbed grand design spiral galaxy located 440 million light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +46 degrees. This magnitude 14 galaxy spans 1.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 170,000 light years. Our view of this galaxy disk is about 45 degrees, halfway between face-on and edge-on.

In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Small, High Surface Brightness Companions on Arms. Dr. Arp’s notes indicate that seeing was better than average for his image.

The small companion galaxy at left is SDSS J163514.15+461232.6. It is about 20,000 light years in length. Unlike many Arp "companions", this one truly appears to be a companion and not just a distant line-of-sight galaxy. It seems to be connected to the main galaxy through a curving star stream.
