Description

These Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 240 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +4 degrees.   In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Galaxies with Adjacent Loops.

NGC 7682 is the magnitude 14 barred spiral at lower left. It is a Seyfert galaxy with a diameter of 90,000 light years.

NGC 7679 is the disturbed magnitude 13 barred lenticular galaxy at upper right.  It is also a Seyfert galaxy and is similar in size to our Milky Way, at 120,000 light years in diameter.   I need to obtain more time on this one to see the faint star streams and interesting core area in more detail.  This galaxy is also categorized as a starburst galaxy.

Detailed studies have found a huge neutral hydrogen (H I) bridge connecting these 2 galaxies, likely from a closer encounter long ago.  This confirms that NGC 7682 is the likely source of the disturbance seen in NGC 7679.
