Description

AE Aurigae is a "runaway" star, having been ejected from the Trapezium cluster almost 2 million years ago. Surrounding it is the emission and reflection nebula, IC 405, also known as the Flaming Star nebula. This is a really neat object to image because the reflection nebula cannot be captured using narrow band imaging, while the emission nebula is strong in H-alpha and SII . I captured this image combining H-alpha data for the emission nebula with RGB for the blue reflection component around AE Aurigae. Data for blue was acquired from a dark sky site outside Milwaukee to get the contrast in the reflection nebula and make it stand out against the dominant H-alpha signal; red, green, and H-alpha from my Bortle 6 backyard.
