Description

NGC 4535 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo. The bar runs across the core of this galaxy, which is 54 million light years away. Amateur astronomer Lehland Copeland named it "The Lost Galaxy" in the 1950's. It has an apparent magnitude of 10.7 and is very small at 11.8 arcseconds x 11.0 arcseconds

The bright blue-ish colors, seen nestled amongst NGC 4535’s long, spiral arms, indicate the presence of a greater number of younger and hotter stars. In contrast, the yellower tones of this galaxy’s bulge suggest that this central area is home to stars which are older and cooler.
