Description

This comet has been a complete blast to follow and image. I have used every focal length from 20mm-50mm-85mm-135mm-400mm. The comet was constantly changing and full of surprises.

My best view was from Spruce Knob on July 18. It was spectacular.

I was motivated by Roland Christen's long focal length detail of the ion tail to take this image from Calhoun County Park in WV. I went with the RASA to get the exposure times as short as possible in order to minimize star trailing as well as to freeze the motion of the tail.

In the end, I ended up stacking 20x30 second exposures in order to freeze the tail "waves" and to improve the signal to noise ration. I did guide on the Comet successfully with the ASI AIR pro.

Roland also posted a GIF showing the rotation of the nucleus and the gas jets associated with that rotation. I am guessing the "wave" in the ion tail is directly related to that gas jet rotating. So long Comet Neowise...you were glorious!
