Description

We've had some unsettled weather here in Arizona this last week or so but I did take one opportunity to get out and try to do some lunar stuff. According to Telescopius.com, the seeing was poor and I believe it as I had a lot of shimmering on the screen as I was trying to capture some images. But one could

see small pauses in that shimmer of better seeing. So not completely terrible.

I have acquired an ASI290mc primarily for planetary work because I wanted to begin using Winjupos and did not want the complication, at least in the beginning, of having to work with the three color channels. So I decided to try this camera out with lunar work.

This camera does have a USB 3 interface and that helps with frame rate. I was also using a computer that has a SDD as well to further eliminate any bottlenecks for data transfer. I was able to hit nearly 200fps on some smaller images and well over 50fps for larger images in color which I thought would help considering the seeing. But I do remember someone who really is good at this kind of work make a comment that 50fps or greater is what is needed to sufficiently freeze the seeing. This image was made from the best 5% of 9,604 frames.

I'm posting both the color image and the monochrome image. I think I like the mono image a little better but one thing is for sure, I do believe the 290mm mini I have makes better images. I also attempted to be very conservative in the saturation of the color image. However, I do see some false color in the interior of some of the high albedo craters. Might be a sharpening artifact?

Anyway, the result is pretty good I think considering the poor seeing.

Comments and criticism always welcome, Clear Skies!!
