Description

The Rosette nebula, seemed a good Christmas target under a bright moon. This LL(Ha)RGB image comprises LRGB supported by just over an hour of Ha collected via my Optolong narrow band filter, which really brings out the detail in these rich hydrogen emissions, contrasting the dark knots and brighter filaments.

I have totally reprocessed my data for NGC2244 using ASTAP to align and combine the best subs, comprising 37 x 120s L (combined luminance frames shot through IR cut and my duo narrow band filter), 7 x 120s R, 7 x 120s G, and 10 x 120s B - total integration = 122m. Processed in Startools with a standard workflow, followed by saturation boost, I think this is a cleaner image than my last with 13% less data. Taken with my little 80ED semi-APO with a Meade 0.33 focal reducer ~f4, there is significant vignetting and warping of stars around the field - I've left this as it gives a sort of time warp into the core - which in a sense it is!

The 'Christmas Rose' surrounds NGC 2244 an open cluster of bright stars, formed more than 4m years ago from the nebula, and providing the energy that now ionises the surrounding hydrogen gas. At 4,500 LY distance and 50 LY diameter this is one huge cluster [apod.nasa.gov].

Description: My 'penultimate' version, stacked and aligned in Penumbra with HDR brightening and sharpening, before colour composition in Startools, and reduction of stars. I hope you like it.

Description: As my favourite, and I think best picture of 2020 (IMHO), I have stacked and aligned a high resolution version using Penumbra v0.6. The resulting LL(Ha) and RGB frames were then rotated and aligned in Nebulosity v3, before transferring to Startools v1.7 for further HDR brightening, deconvolution and some shrinking and de-warping of stars at the edge of the field. (PS. this has taken most of the day on my ageing pentium M laptop!)

Description: To complete the stable, I have attached the monochrome image, made up of 120s Luminance and narrowband (Ha/Hb and OIII) frames (originally captured using 2x2 binning to increase SNR, and beat the clouds).
