Description

About a week after the new moon in September, I was on vacation on the Outer Banks. I really wanted to get some decent shots, but the bright moonlight was a pain. I had to wait until the moon set and the MW was already past 90 degrees with the best part of the core below the horizon. I was on my way to Bodie Island Lighthouse and somehow missed the turn and couldn't turn around until I hit the Oregon Inlet. I knew this area was Bortle Class 2 sky, so I parked the SUV and stepped out to see launching from over the clouds the unmistakable Milky Way, with the star clusters and great rift easily noticeable. What I didn't see, because it was so dark, were the power lines just over the sand barge. Still, even with that irritant, the shot came out great with horizon light pollution providing an almost aurora-like glow. I've noticed I get more green than amber on the horizon with my new Canon EOS RP (full spectrum modified) than I did with my EOS1-D Mark IV. But the magenta coming through like it does on the RP, I'll deal with the green until I can get a IR Cut Filter.
