Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a fantastic grand spiral galaxy located 100 million light years away in the constellation of Crater at a declination of -24 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 2.4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.  I calculate that we are looking at this disk about 30 degrees from edge-on.

Each spiral arm starts a distance from the bright yellow core, as if this galaxy is barred, and evolves outward for 180 degrees.  Significant star formation is occurring in each of the spiral arms, but only in the first half of each.

Following the complete path of both arms, the disk structure appears to be warped.  But because of our single view perspective, that is impossible to verify.
