Description

Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) - A giant globular cluster in the constellation of Centaurus, at around 15,800 light years distance, the largest globular cluster in the Milky Way galaxy. With a diameter of around 150 light years it is estimated to contain around 10 million stars. Omega Centauri was first identified by Edmond Halley in 1677.

One theory is that it is the core remnant of a disturbed dwarf galaxy.

It appears almost as large as the full moon from a dark site.
