Description

Messier 94 (NGC 4736), also known as the Croc's Eye Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781,and cataloged by Charles Messier two days later. Although some references describe M94 as a barred spiral galaxy, the "bar" structure appears to be more oval-shaped. The galaxy has two ring structures, but in this image the rings appear as a nearly featureless dull halo around a brighter galaxy structure,, which in turn surrounds a very bright core.

Messier 94 can be found 3 degrees east and a little south of Chara, the second brightest star in Canes Venatici. Chara lies a little more than 5 degrees northwest of Cor Caroli, (Alpha Canum Venaticorum) a binary star and the constellation’s brightest star.
