Description

This image capture 3 galaxy objects located in the constellation of Ursa Major - NGC 3718/Arp 214 (center), NGC 3729 (upper right), and Hickson 56 galaxy group (left). Each of these 3 objects is amazing, consisting of galaxies severely distorted by gravitational interaction.

Both of the larger galaxies are 50 million light years away and are interacting with each other. The entire plane of NGC3718 appears to be twisted one-half of a turn. The twisting is symmetric, resulting in a beautiful dark spiral dust lane wrapping around its yellowish central core. A faint hazy outer shell is visible surrounding the entire object.

NGC 3729 is also severely disturbed. It appears to have a barred core, connected to a ring which extends around the core but is disrupted at the lower right side. Star formation has been initiated in this ring, with many bright blue star clusters visible. As with NGC 3718, a hazy shell encompasses the entire galaxy, with a spherical concentration of stars at the upper right.

The Hickson 56 galaxy group on the left is a background group of galaxies that is 400 million light years from us - 8 times farther than the foreground group of NGC 3718 and 3729. 4 of the 5 galaxies appear to be interacting and linked together. Unlike most other distant galaxy groups which have a yellow cast, this group has a white cast, which implies that the galaxies have younger hot bluish stars.
