Description

This object is a beautiful small barred lenticular galaxy located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Leo Minor.

The structure of this galaxy is fascinating. The bright core has a slightly less bright bar running through it, and is surrounded by a medium brightness ring. This ring is in turn surrounded by a dim larger ring, similar in diameter to our Milky Way. The apparent size of this larger ring is about 4 arc-minutes. Between the two rings is a very dim annular section which is virtually absent of stars at the two regions which are perpendicular to the bar axis. According to the Cambridge Galaxy Atlas, these two regions correspond to two Lagrange points of the bar potential for which no stable stellar orbits are possible.

Numerous smaller background galaxies can be seen throughout the image, including several tiny galaxies which can be seen through the bottom edge of NGC 2859.
