Description

M90 is one of the prototypes for a type of galaxy called an anemic galaxy. In the middle of the Virgo galaxy cluster, its high speed through the dense intergalactic medium has stripped the galaxy of much of the interstellar medium needed for star formation. The lack of ongoing star formation has resulted in the unusually smooth looking spiral arms, and long tails of ionised gas. Also unusually, the spectrum of this galaxy appears to be blueshifted even though it is 60 million light years away.
