Description

The Needle Galaxy, NGC 4565, Caldwell 38, is an excellent example of an edge-on spiral galaxy. It was discovered by William Herschel on April 6th, 1785. NGC 4565 has a visual magnitude of 10, and lies 40 million light-years away in the constellation Comma Berenices. It lies close to the North Galactic Pole and is approximately 100,000 light years across.
