Description

M81 and M82 shot from my back garden in London on one night.

M81, also known as Bode's Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy 12 million light years from us and was discovered by Johann Elert Bode on December 31, 1774. M82 is also known as the Cigar Galaxy is a starburst galaxy, a similar distance away from us as M81. The starburst activity is thought to be due to interaction with M81.

I went with the OSC camera for this target, but ran into calibration issues and had to darken the background more than I would have liked. Ideally I would also have liked to capture some Ha data to show the starburst in M82 better. I might come back to this one!

The image is a crop from the original captures.

Thanks for looking!
