And the second one this year! Never thought it could get better, but apparently turning the guiding off (or almost, ramped up the exposure time to 10 sec.) really improved my guiding, aka sharpness. So I did waste all that exposure time on the lobster claw. Well, can’t have it all.

Here it is, certainly one of my best shots from the windowsill by now. Good sharpness, so zooming in on 200% still won’t let you drown in noise and the s2 and o3 colors did turn out quite well, even though their quality is so low due to the bin2x2. But the binning helped me getting these done in 2 nights.

The h-alpha took me longer, that’s around 10,2h of data. Even added old shots from 2018 in the stack to get the noise down. But used the subframes elector to sort out about 12,5h of data due to low FWHM values. Kicked all below 2,9 out. But when you have 23h of data it doesn’t hurt so much. ;-)

In processing I stayed as long as possible in linear and used a masked deconvolution to get an initial sharpness. Even did some sharpening in non-linear.

So when you have a good luminance, aka h-alpha, the rest of the color channels (in my case the o3 and s2) don’t need to be sharp at all. Just doing some harsh denoising and I stayed put on overdoing the initial stretching was the way to go here. Before this, I always tried to stretch (masked) as much possible to get the faint nebula parts more prominent, but thanks to the immense core brightness of this nebula, I could keep it reasonable this time.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
