Description

This object is a nearly face-on spiral barred ringed galaxy located 70 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo. The galaxy is about the same size as ours at 120,000 light years. The apparent size of this galaxy to us is less than 5 arc-minutes.

I like so many things about this underappreciated galaxy, the primary one being the wonderfully complex graceful structure. The bar within the core is extremely luminous. The galaxy has a great color contrast between the bluish arms and the yellowish core.

Numerous small galaxies are visible through the galaxy arms, the brightest being just below and left of the core. This small galaxy is almost 10x further away than NGC 5701, at a distance of 600 million light years.

Hundreds of orange, stellar-like distant galaxies are visible throughout the image background, especially on the right side. These galaxies are joined by several quasars, 10 billion light years away, as shown in the attached annotated image.
