Description

This object is a pair of colliding galaxies (Caldwell 60 and 61) located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Corvus. I find this object to be one of the most visually fascinating of all of the deep sky objects. The galaxies have been deformed so severely by their gravitational interaction that it is hard to even recognize the original shape of each galaxy. The cores of the two galaxies can be seen in the two brightest areas located next to each other at the same vertical height in the image.

The starburst phase typically associated with interacting galaxies is clearly seen in the many pinkish star formation areas of each galaxy. Beautiful dense star streams are evidence that this interaction has been occurring for a long time. Along with everything else, the dust lanes have been warped into a knotted wonderful mess. The transition of these two galaxies into a single galaxy should be fun and interesting to watch for the next million years.

The two long tidal tails have a combined length of almost 400,000 light years. The long tails in this image are a great example of how tidal interactions cause star streams to flow out of the outer galaxy disk regions when two galaxies approach each other.

I like so many things about this object - the fascinating graceful overall shape, the 3-D look, the detailed star streams and the beautiful star background. My favorite part of this image is the wonderful color diversity, which is unusual for a galaxy image. I see so many colors - the usual blues and pinks, but also varying shades of yellow, orange, brown, gray and bright white.
