Description

This is a 2-panel mosaic of NGC7000, The North America Nebula, an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus (The swan or “northern cross”). It is estimated that this nebula lies 1,800 light years from Earth. However this distance is not exactly known.

The shape of the nebula resembles that of the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico. This nebula and others nearby are parts of an interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen. Between the Earth and this nebula complex lies a band of interstellar dust that absorbs the light of stars and nebulae behind it forming the shape seen in this image.

The Cygnus Wall component, which is easily seen on the “western” side of the Mexico shape, is a super-concentrated area of star formation.

Because its surface brightness is low, it cannot be seen with the unaided eye. Its reddish color is due to light emitted on the hydrogen alpha (Ha) spectral line wavelength which would appear deep-red to our eyes. The imaging camera (Canon T4i) was modified to replace the factory IR-cut filter to allow the Ha wavelength to pass through to the imaging sensor.
