Yes, I like doing Globular Clusters, lol...

The Gumball Cluster is located about 15,700 ly away in Ophiucus. It contains approximately 200,000 stars.

Surprisingly, there are very few low mass stars and this may be because the cluster has passed through the Milky Way several times during which, many of the lower mass stars were stripped away by the gravitational attraction of the denser parts of the galaxy. There are, as in many globular clusters, a number of x-ray binaries in M12.

It is thought that this cluster has lost around 1 million stars during it's lifetime.

As far as the imaging is concerned, I wanted to try to shorten the exposures and do more of them to see how that impacted the stars shape, color and noise. It seems the color is better than that which I obtained in other images using lnger exposures. With the small pixels of the 183, I think this is a good practice. The noise seemed to be easier to work with as well.

Description: Completely reprocessed using some addition luminance frames. I culled the best 1/2 of 280 FWHM and made a luminance image. Then applied that to the entirety of the native OSC image that was also completely reprocessed. I think the difference is significant enough to publish this revision.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
