I was extremely lucky as I got up at 03:30 to image the GRS in a fairly central position. The seeing was very good. I normally do 9 or 10 RGB runs of 1 minute per colour channel. However, I was only 3 runs in when this huge band of cloud appeared and I was clouded out very quickly.
Most fortunately the 3 runs I had were of high quality and thus I was able to produce this quite high resolution image.
You can see the remnants of the last streamer as a thin red line extend across the RSH and getting caught up in South Equatorial Belt, south (SEBs) and spilling into the South Tropical Zone (STrZ). On the other side of the GRS another huge calving event seems to be taking place.
The frequency of these unprecedented events and the amount of material the GRS seems to be losing is perhaps suggestive that the GRS needs a certain size to be stable and below that it will break up, maybe quite quickly. Of course, this is pure conjecture and no doubt premature, but it is an interesting speculation.
The next 24 hours will be very interesting.
