Description

Frank Melillo is a friend and fellow amateur astronomer. He had an asteroid named after him.

Asteroid 30068 frankmelillo was originally designated as 2000 EZ70 and was discovered in 2000 by the Catalina Observatory in Arizona. Frank's work with the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) was recognized by the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and it was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the Minor Planet Center.

The asteroid orbits around the sun in 4.5 years and is inclined approximately 10 degrees with respect to earth's orbit. It is at opposition on June 6th, 2019 in the constellation Ophiuchus.

Note it was magnitude 17.5, extincted to 17.7

As a reference, Pluto is currently magnitude 14.2, so planet Pluto is 25X brighter than this asteroid, near its peak brightness
