Description

NGC 4565 aka the Needle Galaxy is a spiral galaxy roughly a third larger than the Milky Way which lies approximately 40 million light years away from us. The galaxy is an edge on spiral as it is oriented perpendicular to our line of sight. As a result our view of the Needle Galaxy is actually quite similar to our view our own Milky Way in that in both cases we can see how the gas and dust of the spiral arms blocks out a portion of the bright core of the galaxy. As you can see in the image the Needle Galaxy has a bright yellow central bulge which is thicker than the surrounding spiral arms. This is common trait of spiral galaxies but one which is typically not evident given the more common face on orientation of most galaxies.

As with the Sunflower Galaxy this is my first time imaging the Needle Galaxy and once again I'm amazed at how much detail I could pick up with my 6se despite the galaxy being a magnitude 10.4 object which might actually be the dimmest object I've ever imaged.
