Description

M83 The Southern Pinwheel in Hydra...

This galaxy is in the group that includes Centaurus A and lies about 15 million light years away. It is about 1/2 the size of the Milky Way and does contain a good amount of new star birth regions. It also has a double nucleus which may be the result of a galactic merger long ago.

The above information was obtained from messier-objects.com.

This one was a little bit difficult to do and the quality suffers because of the fact that it only rises 27 degrees above the horizon at transit. I also had some difficulty with my calibration files. I may have shot the galaxy at a different gain by accident. I have re-done the calibration images several times to no avail. So unfortunately, I am leaving some data on the table so to speak. I do think this is worth revisiting next year but in March or April rather than May.

I knew it would be a little more difficult because of the lack of elevation above the horizona but I wanted to do this anyway to see what would happen and because these barred spirals are very interesting to me.

Anyway, I hope anyone who views it believes it was good enough to publish. Comments and/or criticism always welcome.

CS to everyone!
Mike
