Description

Dodging clouds on last night's near-New Moon evening, I was able to get a little bit of time in on the Owl Nebula (the green circle) and the Surfboard Galaxy (to the bottom right).

Located near the Big Dipper, the Owl Nebula (M97) is about 2,000 light years away and only about 8,000 years old. It's the remnants of gas ejected by its central white dwarf star that you can see in between the two dark "eyes" of the Owl.

The Surfboard Galaxy (M108) is a typical spiral galaxy (seen edge on), located about 46 million light years away.
