Description

This is a lovely medium sized galaxy near Hickson 68 that doesn't seem to be imaged much. It is about 4 by arc minutes or about 1/3 the diameter of M51, but has lower surface brightness, which might be why it doesn't get much attention.

This isn't a very deep image at only 24 minutes integration time, but it does show a rich network of dust lanes and numerous blue O-B associations along with plenty of red HII regions, from my light polluted backyard. The outer regions of the two major arms are harder to pick up due to light pollution. I'll collect more data on this galaxy as time goes by to see if how much I can improve it.

The field also contains a few large faint bluish irregulars and a nice chain of distant yellow ellipticals that are about 2.5 billion light years beyond NGC 5271, which is only 100 million light years away. The universe is a big place.
