Description

This object, also known as IC 4603, is a reflection nebula located about 400 light years away in the constellation of Ophiuchius. This field of view is just a small part of the beautiful Rho Ophiuchus Nebula Complex.

The image is primarily blue because of the starlight illuminated interstellar dust throughout the field of view. The same dust creates an orange cast to the background stars. The dust is so thick in spots that it completely hides some of the stars. The small, bright flare-type area at the top right of the image is interesting, as is the "E-E-E" shaped dark dust cloud just below it.

This was a tough object to image and process. In my subs, all I saw were the 2 central stars plus a few hints of dark clouds. I stretched the final image quite a bit to help bring out the beautiful subtle dark dust clouds flowing throughout the image. This stretching also brought out more of the noise in the image.

I am very happy and excited to be imaging again after over a month of downtime, due to a mount repair and a wonderful family trip to Slovenia and Croatia.
