Description

Between the unusually long (for this time of year) cloudy and rainy period we've had here recently, and having to "thread the needle" between several overseas trips this month, I was beginning to think I would not have an opportunity to image Jupiter at opposition this time around.

I was therefore very relieved and happy to find that the clouds cleared on the night on 10th June ... and that the seeing was very good as well! Transparency was slightly compromised by hazy, high-level clouds, but well within acceptable limits.

My plans for an extended imaging session to hopefully produce a high-resolution animation were dashed after around 20 minutes, at which stage a seemingly endless string of low-level clouds passed directly over my location ... and my location only it would seem. (I could see perfectly clear skies to my left and right - cheeky clouds!)

But with the quality of the data I was able to obtain during those 20 minutes, I really can't complain.

The image you see here is a de-rotation of 9 x 90s captures. Probably the most detailed image I've been able to produce, with very fine structures apparent in the equatorial zone and polar regions.

The GRS appears to have recovered from its recent turmoil, assuming a more regular shape. The brown cloud band at the southern edge of the SEB, which has been encircling the GRS recently, appears to now be disrupted to the north of the GRS. Interestingly, that brown cloud band does not seem to be returning to its usual path around the GRS and continuing in its wake ... with that wake of the GRS appearing to increase in complexity.
