The Gabriela Mistral nebula (NGC 3324) on the outskirts of the Eta Carina Nebula last night from Phillip Island.

Gabriela Mistral (7,200 Light Years away) is an emission nebula with hydrogen and oxygen gas excited by an open star cluster at its centre. The nebula is colloquially named after the pseudonym name (Gabriela Mistral) used by the Chilean poet-diplomat, educator and humanist - Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. Some central themes in her poems are nature, betrayal, love, a mother's love, sorrow and recovery, travel, and Latin American identity as formed from a mixture of Native American and European influences. Her portrait also appears on the 5,000 Chilean peso bank note (Wikipedia). Her face is seen as a profile in the nebula looking almost downward towards the right.

Gas and dust in NGC 3324 fueled a burst of starbirth millions of years ago and created several extremely hot and massive stars. The intense ultraviolet radiation from these hot young stars causes the gas cloud to glow and has carved out a cavity in the surrounding gas and dust as the stars slowly erode the gas cloud away.

60 x 1 minute (Ha), -20 Celcius CMOS chip Temp, Bin 1x1.

60 x 1 minute (OIII), -20 Celcius CMOS chip Temp, Bin 1x1.

Calibrations: Bias (50), Darks (30), Ha and OIII Flats (30 each).

I was hoping for 6 hours of data (2 hours each of Ha, OIII and SII) but the clouds rolled in and cut my imaging session short at around 11pm, so running with a HOO version for now until I get another clear night.
