Description

Antares - also known as Alpha Scorpii, forms the heart of the Scorpion in the constellation of Scorpius. Known to the ancient Chinese as the Fire Star, Antares is a slow-variable red supergiant star, whose radius would engulf the orbit of Mars were it to lie in the suns position. In fact the very name Antares comes from Anti-Ares, or Rival-to-Mars, as ancient astronomers likely thought this reddish star looked like the red planet Mars. At a very young 11 million years old, Antares is nearing the end of its life and when it consumes all its remaining fuel it will collapse then go supernova in the near future. It has consumed all its hydrogen and is now fusing heavy elements in its final stages. The average density of Antares is around one millionth of that of the sun.
